If you’re one of the million (literally) people who pass through New York City’s Grand Central Station each day, holiday shopping is a whole lot easier with a swing by the Holiday Fair just off the station’s iconic main hall.
In a carefully curated and inventive collection of vendors and artisans, this is a pop-up market with a soul. A clear emphasis on locally sourced and socially conscious businesses rests easy with the range of unique, whimsical and high-quality goods on offer – no tacky “covered clothes pin” ornaments here. No jellies, no cutesy pet gifts either. Just great stuff.
Here are (at least) 5 reasons why you should check it out and a map to guide you.
1. Danielle Gori-Montanelli
Really – it’s felt. Felt-fashioned jewelry – inspired by licorice and candied “fruit slices”, succulents and Escher geometric designs. Not to mention pencils, couches, well, you get the idea. Necklaces too, in rainbow colors.
These prints capture New York, even the most unlikely public spaces, in a golden tones, literally. Landscapes, too, are the included in the series, in two sizes, framed or unframed.
3. Cate and Levi
The cutest hand puppets, children’s hats and slippers. Bet you can’t buy just one thing….
4. In 2 design Of the several lovely booths featuring women’s accessories this one is a stand-out; jewelry worn simply or combined as a “statement”. Perfect for playing secret Santa or, you know, a bit of self-gifting most of us are guilty of (ahem).
5. Raw Design
Nothing but pepper mills (a bit of salt thrown in, too) but what fun!
Also of note….
– Woodstock Mobiles Unleash your inner Calder; these are very cool – I wish I had the space.
– Nancy Zylstra, Swanky Belts Handmade buckles, just beautiful art for the waist. Perfect gift for the HIM on your list, or see women’s line in link. I covet them.
– The Glass Haus A collaborative of three glass blowers. Your rescue for that hostess gift you forgot to buy, or a quick souvenir from the city. Seasonal, fun and tasteful.
Holiday pick-me-up – with wonderfully fresh Nordic-inspired bites, coffee or the all-important cocktail. Just across from the market. Happily, this is permanent.
Smoked salmon snack….yum!
Happy shopping!!
Cheers,
Jane
